Check out this awesome free crochet pattern available on Ravelry from Jen Spears: the Star Wars Droid Beanies! I made this pattern a little while ago with a few modifications, and wanted to share this pattern in case you haven’t seen it already. Below, I will go into detail what changes I made to make the super cute hat pictured! The link for this pattern is available at the end.
Materials Used
- Caron Simply Soft- White
- Caron Simply Soft- Black
- Caron Simply Soft- Red
- Caron Simply Soft- Navy
- 5.0 mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle…. and a lot of patience
Modifications Made
I used white instead of grey for the R2D2 droid beanie. On the bottom lower band, I used blue all the way around for these rows instead of having blue in the front and white in the back. I added two more rows for length. I finished this hat with ear flaps and tied braids to the bottom. I did not follow any particular pattern for the ear flaps, but I found a video tutorial, linked here, that explains how to add the ear flaps on.
Conclusions/ Final Thoughts
I really enjoyed this adult sized hat pattern and found it easy to follow. I did not have any trouble getting this to work as an adult size, besides needing to increase the length by two rows. The only part of the pattern that particularly vexed me was the amount of ends that I had to weave in once finished with the embellishments. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would incorporate the embellishments while in the round, like a graphgan or other graph chart. This would at least save me from having to sew on all the pieces.
Please check out the Star Wars Droid Beanie pattern and make a couple for the nerdy person in your life! I will definitely be making a few more of these so that my friends and I can match.
