How to Make a Magic Ring in Crochet (So easy, it’s Magic!)

I have a few fantastic crochet patterns coming up that require the magic ring, so I wanted to share how to make a magic ring. Magic rings are “magical” because they provide a tight, less “hole-y” way to start a circle for a project. We all know how powerful this technique is, due to the sheer number of projects that start as a circle- doilies, blankets, amigurumis, coasters, and more! For a more beautiful, consistent beginning in these projects, please read below to see a photo and written tutorial on how to make a magic ring.

Step 1: Make a Loop

We first start a magic loop by, you guessed it, making a loop around your fingers. Grab the yarn, and loop it over your middle finger and index finger. Wrap the yarn under your index finger, and back up around the top of your fingers, keeping the “tail” towards the front.

As seen in the photo, the working yarn goes from the middle finger down, and then tail is towards the front.

Step 2: Strategically Place Your Hook, Chain 1

Now that you have looped the yarn around your finger, here is where the magic begins.

Pull the working yarn (the back loop) underneath the tail (this should be the loop towards the front of your fingers). Pull up this loop slightly, and chain 1. This is the most difficult part of the magic loop- I hold the two loops together during the chain 1 to help keep the magic loop stable.

Step 3: Stitch Into the Magic Loop

Single crochet into the chain, going around both the loop and the tail. Continue to single crochet into the loop until you have the desired number of stitches.

Please note that some patterns may call for another stitch. For this example, I am showing 6 single crochets in the magic loop as this tends to be the most common.

Step 4: Pull The Tail to Close The Circle

Pull the tail, and loop will magically close! Amazing.
