Watermelon Coaster Crochet Pattern

Watermelon Coaster Crochet Pattern

Hello everyone! Although I have been getting ready for fall, I still have a few summer ideas to share. I loved the kiwi coasters that I made and wanted to make a few more fruits to go with the set. Next up- the watermelon coaster crochet pattern! This uses the technique of slip stitch surface crochet to get a thin “rind” on the edge that looks pretty similar to an actual watermelon!

Any type of medium / 4 weight yarn will work fine for this pattern. I am using acrylic, but cotton would also be a good fiber type for coasters. Have questions about the right type of yarn to use when making coasters? Check out my recent post linked here that compares the different fiber types.

Materials

  • Caron Simply Soft in Strawberry (pink), Pistachio (light green), Dark Sage (dark green), and Black
  • Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors

Abbreviations

  • CH – chain
  • DC – double crochet
  • HDC – half double crochet
  • SC – single crochet
  • SL ST – slip stitch
  • ST – stitch

Note: Rounds are worked row by row, not “in the round”. Do not turn work. Stitch count at end of row is in parentheses.

Row 1: With Strawberry, make a magic loop. CH 1 to close the loop, then CH 1. Make 12 DC into the magic loop. Pull loop to close. SL ST to beginning of row. (12 ST)

Row 2: CH 2. Make 2 DC in every ST around. SL ST to beginning of row. (24 ST)

Row 3: CH 2. *Make 2 HDC in the first ST, then 1 HDC in the next. Repeat from * to end of row. Switch color to Pistachio, then SL ST to beginning of row. (36 ST)

Row 4: CH 1. *Make 2 SC in the first ST, then 1 SC in the next 2 ST. Repeat from * to end of row. SL ST to beginning of row and fasten off. (48 ST)

With Dark Sage, surface slip stitch crochet in the spaces between the pink and light green sections.

The seeds are added on at the end, after the coaster is finished. Because of how spread out the seeds are, I chose to place each one individually. You can weave in or tie the ends.
